The industry has continued to stay relatively stagnant to the 1.4% of all institutional capital managed by diverse leaders (Knight Foundation 2021 Report). Per Knight Foundation, “returns from firms owned by women and individuals of color are at least at par with their less diverse counterparts while their AUM is smaller…resulting in opportunities for outperformance that are being missed by investors.”

However, for asset owners who want to make an impact investing in opportunities with diverse and emerging managers they require infrastructure to measure and track. To date there is no single agreed upon method used across the industry, resulting in friction for managers, consultants and asset owners alike.
